In Cal's first bowl game under Jeff Tedford the Golden Bears defeated Virginia Tech 52-49 on a game ending 35 yard field goal by Tyler Frederickson.  

Virginia Tech opened the game with a 21-7 first quarter lead over Cal.  The Golden Bears close the gap to 21-28 going into halftime.  Aaron Rodgers who passed for 394 yards in the game led Cal to 21 straight points. With the score tied 49-49 with less than two minutes left in the game Cal took possession at their own 35 yard line.  The Golden Bears drove down the field, setting up the 35 yard game winning field goal by Tyler Frederickson.
